THE MOUNTAINS WITHIN: WHAT NIMSDAI TAUGHT US ABOUT BENDING LIMITS | BY KARISHMA

“Giving up is not in the blood, sir. It’s not in the blood”

Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja

The world recently lost a true hero, Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja, the legendary mountaineer known worldwide from his famous story, 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible. Nimsdai did not just climb mountains but he changed what people thought a human being could do. He climbed the 14 highest mountains in the world in just six months and six days, a record experts swore was completely impossible.

Recently, Nimsdai’s legendary journey ended on the mountains he loved so deeply. But a life lived so bravely leaves behind a blueprint for all of us.

As parents and grandparents, when we look at someone with so much courage, the question arises: What can our children learn from a climber of giants? How do his lessons from the ice and snow help our kids navigate the big feelings and tough days down here?

Here are five beautiful lessons Nimsdai left for our children:

  1. “When you feel like you are broken, you are only 45 percent done”.

When Nimsdai was climbing, his body would hurt, the cold would bite, and exhaustion would creep in. Yet, he taught a powerful mental trick: When your mind tells you that you are completely out of energy and want to quit, you actually still have more than half your strength left.

For our kids who often want to give up the moment something feels too hard whether it is a tough school project or a complex game. This teaches them that being tired is just a feeling, not a stop sign. When we think we have nothing left, we are actually much stronger than we know.

  1. A Smile can be your strongest tool

If you watch 14 peaks you will notice something amazing. No matter how freezing it got, or how dangerous the climb was, Nimsdai was always smiling, joking, and even dancing at Base Camp with his team because he knew that panic drains your energy while joy gives you strength. This is a wonderful reminder for our children that when things get hard, a heavy, angry heart only makes the climb tougher, whereas keeping a positive mind and laughing with friends can give us the magic push we need.

  1. True Strength means turning back to help others

Even though Nimsdai was racing against time to break world records, whenever he saw a fellow climber struggling or stuck in danger on the ice, he stopped, sharing his own oxygen and risking his big goals to save them because winning meant nothing if no one was left standing beside him.

Through this, our kids learn that being the “best” is never just about winning a trophy, true heroes are the ones who look back and lift a friend when the trail gets steep, and kindness and courage go hand in hand.

  1. The Mountain doesn’t care who you are

Nimsdai famously said that nature doesn’t care about your frame, your money, or how important you think you are. The mountain treats everyone the exact same way. If you are arrogant, the mountain will humble you. You have to respect the rules, stay calm, and stay grounded.

This teaches our children that life will always throw tests at us that do not care how smart or special we feel, and while pride makes us careless, humility keeps us safe, grounded, and always ready to learn.

  1. You can’t stop the storm, but you can choose how to stand

High up in the “death zone”. The weather changes in seconds. Heavy winds and whiteouts strike without warning. Days before his final climbs, Nimsdai shared a gentle reminder: “I take zero mountains for granted. Not one”.

He respected the scary power of nature, but trusted his own heart to weather the storm which teaches our children that while we cannot stop bad days, meltdowns, or sudden disappointments from happening, they can learn to pause, take a deep breath, and tell themselves, “ I can handle this storm”.

An Inspiration that Never fades

Nimsdai’s physical journey ended where his heart always lived among the tallest, most beautiful peaks in the world. Though he is gone, his spirit stays behind like a shining star to light the way for anyone who dares to dream big.

He leaves behind a simple, unbreakable truth for our children to hold onto forever:The highest mountains in life are not conquered by running away from hard things, but by finding the extraordinary strength hidden inside yourself to reach the top.

Rest in peace, Nimsdai. Thank you for showing us how to touch the sky.
